Pirinelli Improves SLU Hammer Record at ECAC Championships, Wins Another Shot Title

Alyssa Pirinelli improved her own SLU hammer record at the ECACs on Thursday

Alyssa Pirinelli shattered her own St. Lawrence record in the hammer throw to open competition in the 2010 ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Springfield College on Thursday and finished the meet as a double champion, capturing the shot put title on Friday.

Pirinelli improved her SLU record by 2.47 meters with a throw of 54.88 meters (180-1) which stands as the fifth best throw in the nation thus far this season. She won the event by a full two meters. She threw the shot 14.43 meters (47-4.25) to edge Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan of Bates by .06 meters for the title in that event.

The hammer and shot championships were Pirinelli's second and third ECAC titles in her career and she has a total of seven ECAC championships between indoor and outdoor track.

Saint junior Wendy Pavlus finished seventh in the 1500 meters in 4:38.16, improving the 11-year-old record of her high school coach, Amy Farrell, by .51 seconds. It was the last race of the year for Pavlus, a national champion in both cross country and indoor track. While she has qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships as an automatic qualifier in both the steeplechase and 10,000 meters and has the sixth best time this season in the 5000 meters, but will be unable to compete due to a conflict with the start of a summer abroad program in Ethiopia.

First year Jessica Marini scored with a seventh place finish in the 400 hurdles, running 1:04.09, a .21 improvement over her seed time and personal best while classmate Kylie Morris finished in a tie for 10th in the high jump, clearing 1.58 meters.

Pirinelli added an eighth place finish in the discus, throwing 39.25 meters (128-09) with Heather Cutler finishing 17th with a throw of 35.28.
