Pirinelli, Newcomers Shine in Track and Field Opener

Alyssa Pirinelli started her senior year in the right way and several newcomers had impressive debuts as St. Lawrence University's women's track and field team opened the 2009-10 indoor season at the Saint Holiday Relays at the Newell Field House on Saturday afternoon.

Pirinelli, a four-event All America between indoor and outdoor track last season, met the NCAA automatic qualifying standard in winning the shot put with a 14.08 meter throw (46-2.5) and met provisional qualifying standards in the weight throw with a winning mark of 15.75 meters (51-8.25).

First Year Kylie Morris and sophomore Megan Derby were the other event winners for the Saints as Morris won the high jump with a 1.53 meter leap and Derby won the 5000 meters in 18:53.75, meeting ECAC qualifying standards.

Rookie Jessica Marini was second in the 400, running 1:00.80 and ran on the second place 4x400 relay team which included Liz Schwennker, Kelsey Rebehn and Morris and finished in 4:24.60. Jacquelynn Lemme  was second in the 800 in 2:25.57 and Corinne Becker was second in the 55 meters in 7.87.

Jessica Venezia finished second in the triple jump with a 10.16 meter series with Amanda Maynard fourth and Venezia added a third in the long jump at 4.76 meters with Morris finishing sixth. Kiersten LaPorte was fourth in the 55 hurdles with Emily Palmer sixth and Hillary St. John added a second in the 5000 meters.

Jessica Ingals was sixth and Heather Cutler seventh in the shot and Inglas was fourth and Curtler fifth in the weight throw. Amanda Maynard added a fifth in the high jump and Andrea Maynard finished sixth in the 800.

The Saints are now idle for exams and the holidays and will resume competition in mid-January.
