Four Earn All-Conference, All-Academic Honors
Apr. 30: Senior captain Amanda Forbes was named to the Liberty League Second Team for the third straight year on Thursday while three other members of the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team earned Honorable Mention as the conference announced its annual awards Thursday morning.
Forbes (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) was a critical piece for the Saints this season as she scored 40 goals and 7 assists for a team-high 47 total points, recording at least a goal in 13 of St. Lawrence's 14 games. She was valuable on the defensive side of the ball as well, picking up 30 ground balls, controlling 34 draws, and causing 10 turnovers. She tied for sixth in the conference in goals scored at the end of regular season action.
In addition, junior captain Mary Jane Sweetland (Hopewell, NJ/Stuart Country Day), along with sophomores Kelsey Redpath (Norwich, VT/Hanover) and Kim Morse (Peaks Island, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) were named Honorable Mentions.
Sweetland, a co-captain for the Saints this year, recorded 16 goals and seven assists for 23 points. She also picked up 14 ground balls, controlled five draws and recorded two caused turnovers.
Morse, the 2008 Liberty League Rookie of the Year, recorded 28 goals and four assists for 32 points in her sophomore season, including one game-winner against Skidmore. Her efforts against Union and Skidmore earned her 'Co-Offensive Performer of the Week' honors after she scored 10 goals in just two games. She also scooped up 18 ground balls throughout the season, controlled 29 draws, and caused nine turnovers.
Redpath was a great asset to the Saints' starting lineup this season, posting impressive defensive numbers while also finding her way to the net four times and adding five helpers for nine points. The sophomore picked up 44 ground balls, controlled 11 draws, and caused 28 turnovers, the second most in the Liberty League. She averaged less than one turnover per game.
Sweetland was one of four members of the Saints squad to earn a spot on the 2009 Liberty League All-Academic Team. Fellow classmates Courtney Hendrick (Newton, MA/Newton North) and co-captain Anna Parrott (Concord, MA/Holderness), as well as senior Brittany Misercola (Watertown, NY/Watertown) joined her on the list. Students must have a 3.2 GPA or higher and be at least in their second year at their respective institution to be named an All-Academic scholar.
Union's Kristin Joyce was named the conference's ‘Player of the Year' while William Smith's Lucy Johnson earned ‘Rookie of the Year' honors. Union Head Coach Jessica Critchlow and her staff were named the Liberty League's Coaching Staff of the Year after guiding the Dutchwomen to an undefeated 8-0 conference mark and a No. 6 ranking in the country.
St. Lawrence completed their season with a 6-8 overall record and tied for fourth in the conference with a 3-5 mark.
