Saints End Skid With 13-10 Victory Over Thoroughbreds
Apr. 18: Six members of the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team scored on Saturday afternoon, including both members of the senior class, as the Saints used a score of 13-10 to defeat Liberty League opponent Skidmore College to end a five game losing streak and celebrate ‘Senior Day' on North Country Field in Canton, NY.
St. Lawrence improves to a 5-7 overall record and a 2-5 mark in conference play, while Skidmore falls to an even 6-6 and 2-4 in league action.
Sophomore Kim Morse (Peaks Island, ME/Yarmouth Academy) led the Scarlet and Brown's offense for the second straight game, tallying four goals, while senior captain Amanda Forbes (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) and junior captain Mary Jane Sweetland (Hopewell, NJ/Stuart Country Day) each posted three. Junior Katrina Knickerbocker (Clinton Corners, NY/The Gunnery), senior Brittany Misercola (Watertown, NY/Watertown) and rookie Paige Powell (Tuscon, AZ/Wilton) each contributed a goal apiece, while Knickerbocker and Misercola each added an assist. Sophomore Kelsey Redpath (Norwich, VT/Hanover) recorded two helpers and junior Julie Wooters (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) added an assist as well.
In an evenly played first half that witnessed four ties and just as many lead changes, both teams struggled in transition, with the two squads combining for 29 turnovers in the opening 30 minutes of play. Skidmore got on the scoreboard first, but St. Lawrence responded with two quick goals to earn a 2-1 edge with 22:06 to play.
Thoroughbred Kimberly Segalas, who recorded the visiting team's first goal, also netted the second to tie it at two goals apiece with just a little more than half the period remaining. Forbes took a ball off the stick of Wooters with 15:15 left in the stanza to earn a 3-2 advantage, but Skidmore recorded two straight goals, the second off a fast break after controlling the draw, within 18 seconds of each other to take a 4-3 edge with 10:24 left in the first.
Forbes, Sweetland and Powell scored three consecutive goals to overcome the deficit and earn a two goal lead, the first of the game, before Skidmore's Lauren Madden blasted one low past St. Lawrence netminder Anna Marchand (Concord, MA/Middlesex) to cut the lead in half, making it a one goal game with a score of 6-5 in favor of the Saints heading into the break.
For the second day in a row, St. Lawrence came out with something to prove in the second period, holding an edge over their opponent in nearly every aspect of the game in the final 30 minutes and scoring back-to-back goals to open the frame. While Skidmore followed suit with two of their own to climb back within a goal of the home team, St. Lawrence's Sweetland sparked a 5-0 run for the Scarlet and Brown that distanced themselves from their opponent, earning a comfortable 13-7 lead with 16:05 remaining in the contest. The Thoroughbreds continued to have a rough time in the middle of the field, while the Saints continued to race to ground ball opportunities and control nine of the period's 13 draws to score a couple of surprisingly fast goals that put them ahead of Skidmore.
Skidmore recorded the final three goals of the game and played a tough defense to close out the contest, as the Saints didn't record another goal in the remainder of the half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the six-goal advantage St. Lawrence amassed earlier in the period as the home team celebrated their first win on North Country Field this season.
Marchand made six saves for St. Lawrence, while Skidmore's Courtney DeStefano stopped seven.
St. Lawrence held a 28-21 advantage in shots and controlled 16 draws compared to Skidmore's nine. The Saints also held an advantage on the ground (32-21), while the Thoroughbreds only committed 18 turnovers compared to the Scarlet and Brown's 32.
Skidmore was led by Segalas, who recorded four goals, while Lauren Madden added three for the Thoroughbreds.
The Saints will host North Country rival Clarkson University on Tuesday, April 21st at 4:00pm on North Country Field. It will be the final home game of the season for the Saints and will be the final Liberty League regular season contest of the year for both squads.
