Rensselaer Drops Saints, 11-5
Apr. 11: The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team was held to only five goals as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Red Hawks avenged last year's double overtime loss to the Saints and defeated the Scarlet and Brown by a score of 11-5 Saturday afternoon in Liberty League action in Troy, NY.
The Red Hawks improve to 6-5 overall and an even 3-3 in the Liberty League, while the Saints, who endured their fourth straight loss, fell to 4-6 and now stand at 1-4 in conference play.
Leading the Saints was junior Julie Wooters (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) who recorded two goals, one in each half, while sophomores Kelsey Redpath (Norwich, VT/Hanover) and Kim Cooper (Wolfeboro, NH/Brewster Academy) chipped in a goal apiece, as did rookie Liz Fagan (Madison, CT/Loomis Chaffee), who registered her first collegiate goal as a Saint. Rookie Kendall Harty (Norfolk, MA/King Philip) added the Scarlet and Brown's only helper of the contest.
The first half of the game was very much back-and-forth with both teams, but the Saints struggled to execute their shots effectively and find the back of the net, as the Red Hawks took back possession and often converted on their chances. Both teams scored early, but Rensselaer recorded three straight goals following to earn a 4-1 edge with 18:19 to play. St. Lawrence had two players find the back of the net within the next three and a half minutes to climb within one of the home team, but only RPI would score once more with 13:18 left to earn a 5-3 advantage they were able to sustain throughout the remainder of the frame, despite several attempts on the part of the visiting squad.
Carrying that lead into the second, RPI opened with three goals in the 7:10 to earn an 8-3 score with 22:50 left to play. Wooters halted their four-goal scoring run with an unassisted goal just two minutes later, but the Red Hawks were relentless and recorded three more to jump out to an 11-4 lead with just 5:55 remaining, and despite rookies Fagan and Harty teaming up for one more nearly 30 seconds later, Rensselaer walked away with the 11-5 victory.
The two teams each recorded 25 shots, while the Saints pummeled the RPI net with 19 in the first period.
Rensselaer shot evenly in both halves, as the home team recorded 13 in the first and 12 in the second, while the Scarlet and Brown were contained to only six in the final 30 minutes of action. Rensselaer held an edge in both groundballs (16-14) and draw controls (9-8), while St. Lawrence was nearly perfect from the eight-meter, making two of their three free position shots, while Rensselaer was 1-for-7.
St. Lawrence University goalie Anna Marchand (Concord, MA/Middlesex) tallied eight saves, while RPI's Ariana Hood made 14 for the home team.
St. Lawrence will host nationally-ranked Union and Skidmore next weekend in Canton, NY. The Saints will face the Dutchwomen on Friday, April 17th at 4:00pm on North Country Field.
