Britni Smtih '10 has been named a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award.

Mar. 3: The USA Hockey Foundation has announced that St. Lawrence University senior defenseman Britni Smith has been named a top-10 finalist for the 2010 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women's hockey.

Smith has tallied the third-most points this season by a defenseman in the country, picking up 25 points on eight goals and 17 assists.  The Port Perry, ON native had eight multi-point games this season, and picked up Second Team All-ECAC Hockey honors for the second straight year.  A three-time All-Academic team member, Smith also boasts an impressive community service resume that includes volunteering at both the E.J. Nobel Physiotherapy clinic and the Adirondack Physical Therapy Clinics.

"Britni (Smith) has truly developed herself into one of the country's elite defenseman over the last four years," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.  "What sets her apart is her ability to see the game, slow it down and show great poise with the puck."

Smith is the fourth player in University history to be a top-10 finalist for the award.  She joins outstanding company, including Rebecca Russell '05, Jessica Moffat '06 and Sabrina Harbec '08, who thus far has been the program's lone top-3 finalist.

The top-10 finalists for the 2010 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award are (in alphabetical order): Vicki Bendus of Mercyhurst, Emmanuelle Blais of Minnesota Duluth, Bailey Bram of Mercyhurst, Felicia Nelson of St. Cloud State, Sarah Parsons of Dartmouth, Kelly Paton of New Hampshire, Noora Raty of Minnesota, Jesse Scanzano of Mercyhurst, Florence Schelling of Northeastern and Smith.

The three finalists, including the recipient of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, are chosen by a 13-member selection committee comprised of NCAA Division I women's ice hockey coaches, representatives of the print and broadcast media, and a representative of USA Hockey, the National Governing Body for the sport of ice hockey in the United States.  The three finalists for this year's award will be announced March 9.
