Rose Earns Co-Player of the Year, as Teammates and Coaches are Honored

Nov. 7: The St. Lawrence University volleyball team was named third in the Liberty League Saturday, as three players earned conference honors.
Junior captain Abigail Rose was named co-player of the conference, after racking up a total of 115 assists this past weekend. Rose had an impressive 2009 season. As the Saints primary setter, she earned 1166 assists, 135 kills, 360 digs, 88 service aces and 52 block assists.
"It's hard to describe how important Abby is to us as a player and as a captain," St. Lawrence University Head Volleyball Coach Melissa DeRan said. "She continues to develop athletically, but her greatest development has come with her leadership ability. She has really worked hard to grow into that role and you could see the results of that effort this season. She truly deserves to be the player of the year in our conference."
In addition to Rose's success, First-year middle hitter Alexandra Kamakas earned first-team honors, after tallying 34 kills in the Liberty League Tournament. Kamakas had a standout rookie season, accumulating 307 kills, 86 block assists, 38 digs, and 18 solo blocks. Senior captain Jessica Lucky also earned conference honors as she was named to the Liberty League second team. Lucky tallied 321 kills, 452 digs, 71 service aces, and 24 block assists throughout the 2009 campaign.
"I feel that the recognition our players received was well-deserved," Head Coach DeRan said. "These three are excellent representatives of our team and all three have greatly contributed to our continued success."
The Scarlet and Brown walk out on an outstanding season, as the St. Lawrence University Coaching Staff wins the staff of the year award after completing the 2009 season with an overall record of 30-8. "Allie [St. Lawrence University Assistant Volleyball Coach] and I are very appreciative to be recognized as the Staff of the Year," Coach DeRan said. "That award belongs to the entire team; we are fortunate to have tremendous student-athletes who make the program what it is today."
