Saints Pick up One Win and One Loss in Opening Matches of Conference Tournament

Nov. 6: The St. Lawrence University volleyball team, now 29-7, came out with a win and a loss in the opening matches of the 2009 Liberty League Tournament at Vassar College Friday night. The Saints topped Skidmore in match one 3-1, but fell to Vassar by the same score in match two.
The Saints played a tight first game against Skidmore, but the Thoroughbreds nipped the Scarlet and Brown 27-25 after being forced to win by two. St. Lawrence took off after game two, winning the next three 25-21, 25-15, and 25-20 to secure the match victory.
Junior Abigail Rose accumulated a high 41 assists and 25 digs, while sophomore Nyasha Miller racked up 13 kills, 2 service aces, and 7 digs. The Saints continued to play strong at the net with first-year Alexandra Kamakas nailing 15 kills, and senior captain Jessica Lucky grabbing 12. Junior Lauren Drozynski trailed with 8, while junior Jordyn Buzza and sophomore Katherine Pierce each earned 19 digs.
In match two, the Scarlet and Brown earned a five point win in game one against no. 2 host, Vassar College 25-20. The Brewers rallied, defeating the Saints in the next three games, 25-15, 25-11, and 25-18.
Miller lead St. Lawrence with 9 kills. Pierce picked up 21 digs, while Rose tallied 23 assists.
The Saints take on Clarkson University tomorrow, Nov. 7 at 11:00 am and Union College at 1:00 pm in the final rounds of the conference tournament.
