Prue Earns All-Tournament, Saints Split at Houghton
Oct. 27: The St. Lawrence University volleyball team completed its 2012 season on Saturday, splitting its matches at the 2012 Houghton Invitational. The Saints swept Alfred University 3-0 before falling to SUNY Canton by the same score in the afternoon match. Junior Katie Prue earned All-Tournament team honors for her efforts over the weekend.
St. Lawrence closes the season with a 12-23 record.
"Our defense was very good against Alfred, and our service game had them out of system for much of the match," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger. "We were haunted by the same problem we've had all season against SUNY Canton, as we had 28 hitting errors in three sets. We were very sloppy and Canton simply played a cleaner match that us."
Though Alfred (2-23) gave St. Lawrence a game in the opening set of their match, the 25-22 loss was followed by a 25-7 win by the Scarlet and Brown. The Saints made it a 3-0 sweep, winning the third set 25-18.
Sophomore captain Jenna Street had seven kills and no hitting errors while adding 14 assists and a team-high 13 digs. Co-captain Anna Kassab added 18 assists in the win, while rookie Lexi Brown had a team best 11 kills against the Saxons.
St. Lawrence and SUNY Canton (24-2) battled throughout a very tight first set, with the Roos pulling out a narrow 26-24 victory. After falling 25-20 in the second set, the Saints appeared to be headed to a fourth set thanks to a 15-5 lead in the third. However, Canton came roaring back, rattling off a 20-6 run to earn the three-set win (26-24, 25-20, 25-21) and run its winning streak to 17 straight matches.
Prue anchored the Saints' defense with 17 digs, while Street had a team-high 18 assists. Brown again paced the offense with 14 kills, but the 28 errors would prove costly in the season finale.
"It was a disappointing way to finish the season," added Coach Roiger. "With no seniors, it's my expectation that we'll be better next fall, but that will depend on our work ethic in the off-season and the addition of newcomers to the program."
Joining Prue on the Houghton Invitational All-Tournament Team were MacKenzie Mynter (SUNY Canton), Danielle Swanston (SUNY Canton), Allison MacDonald (Maine-Presque), Nicki Loeven (Wells), Chelsea Hall (Alfred), Hannah Fordyce (Brockport) and Lindsay Burgher (Houghton).
Brown closes her rookie year as the team's leader in calls with 342, while classmates Rebecca Doser and Cristina Deschaine each followed with 270 and 223 respectively. Kassab had a team-high 655 assists this fall, while Prue closed with the most service aces (55) and digs (486).
