RIT Rallies to 3-1 Victory over Saints
Oct. 20: The St. Lawrence University volleyball team jumped out to a 1-0 lead against RIT on Saturday in their final Liberty League contest of the season. However, the Tigers rallied behind Cat Sullivan's 13 kills and won three straight sets to earn a 3-1 victory in Potsdam, NY.
The Saints, who were led offensively by rookies Lexi Brown and Cristina Deschaine, fall to 9-22 (3-9) while RIT improved to 23-13 (6-6) and will compete in the conference tournament after earning a 26-28, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 win.
"Our first set was one of our smartest of the season. It was a tight set the entire time and I thought our team made some very good decisions with the ball as well as defensive reads," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger. "The second set was a great set for us from a ‘three contacts' perspective, but our serving game hurt us tremendously as we had seven service errors in that set alone. A mental and physical lapse for a few points haunted us in both sets three and four, and while we continued to play hard, we weren't able to recover from those RIT streaks."
Brown closed with a match-high 15 kills and had only two errors for a .406 hitting percentage. Deschaine had 10 kills and added one block solo and a four block assists. Senior co-captain Anna Kassab closed with 33 assists, while fellow co-captain Katie Prue had 14 digs.
RIT was led by Sullivan, while Suzanne Jokajtys added 12 kills as well. Christina Worth had 41 assists for the Tigers and Bethany Davis had 22 digs.
St. Lawrence will complete its 2012 campaign next weekend at the 2012 Houghton Tournament against the host school, Brockport State, Alfred and SUNY Canton.
