Potsdam State Rallies Past Saints, 3-2

Lexi Brown '16 had a team-high 17 kills against Potsdam State.

Oct. 2: The St. Lawrence University volleyball team saw a 2-1 lead slip away on Tuesday evening, as Potsdam State came from behind in dramatic fashion to earn a 3-2 victory in Potsdam, NY, 22-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-23, 15-9.

St. Lawrence falls to 6-16, while Potsdam State improves to 14-8.

"I thought we played very hard and showed a lot of fight," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger. "However, our fifth set was very, very sloppy and you just can't play at that level in that situation and expect to walk out of the gym with a win. We just didn't play the complete match."

First-year student Lexi Brown led St. Lawrence with 17 kills, while fellow Rookie Rebecca Doser added 14. Co-captain Anna Kassab had a team-high 25 assists, while co-captain Jenna Street had 17 digs.

Potsdam State was led by Rachel Auerbach's 18 kills, while Jenna Blujus had 42 assists.

St. Lawrence came out playing well and took the 1-0 lead, but Potsdam State rebounded to even the match at 1-1. The drama picked up in the third set, as Potsdam State clawed out of a late four-point deficit, only to see the Saints steal the set 28-26 and take a 2-1 advantage.

The Bears again fell behind in the fourth set, but came out of a timeout in style with a solid run to take the lead at 21-20. The teams battled to 23-23, but the home team would come out on top and seize the momentum heading into the deciding fifth set.

Unfortunately for St. Lawrence, the Bears never gave up their momentum as they raced out to a big lead early before the change-over. Several mistakes, including service errors, would cost the Scarlet and Brown in a 15-9 decision.

St. Lawrence will have the weekend off before heading to the Ithaca College Tournament on Friday and Saturday, October 12 and 13.
