Rochester, NYU Sweep Saints at RIT Tourney
Sept. 14: The St. Lawrence University volleyball team was swept on Friday in their opening matches of the 2012 RIT Invitational in Rochester, NY. The Saints lost 3-0 to the University of Rochester and New York University, falling to 3-8 on the season.
"This is a tourney that presents excellent competition that prepares us for Liberty League play, and with injuries continuing to plague us, we're struggling with getting into a flow," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger.
St. Lawrence faced Rochester in the opening match and fell 25-15 in the opening game. The Saints battled back in game two, taking the Yellowjackets the distance before falling 27-25 in a thrilling second set. Rochester would clinch the match with a 25-16 game three win, moving to 7-3 on the season.
First-year students Lexi Brown and Rebecca Doser led St. Lawrence with six kills each, while sophomore Jenna Street had 24 assists and 15 digs. Rochester was led by Kelly Mulrey's 15 kills and Xiaoyi Li's 38 assists.
In the second match, NYU held momentum throughout the match, winning 25-18, 25-12, 25-13. Doser again led the team with six kills, while Street added 17 assists and 13 digs. The Violets (5-3) were led by Jenn Korte (10 kills) and Kaylee Schanda (14 digs).
"We had a lot of unforced errors today and we need to consistently play with heart," added Coach Roiger. "Our energy level dictates our play and that area was too inconsistent for the caliber of competition we are facing. I'm looking forward to a better day tomorrow."
St. Lawrence will be in action again tomorrow against Nazareth and St. John Fisher at 12:00pm and 2:00pm, respectively.
