Dutra, Pellerin, Abribat Lead Saints at League Championships

Jason Dutra '13 won the 100 backstroke at the Liberty League Championships on Saturday.

Dec. 4:  The St. Lawrence University men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded the 2010 Liberty League Championships on Saturday, with both teams earning fourth place overall finishes.  The showing for the women's team was the highest in program history, while sophomore Jason Dutra and senior Jared Pellerin earned their first ever conference championship titles.  Meanwhile sophomore Casey Abribat established a new team record in the 200 back. 

The men finished with 427.5 total points, while Rensselaer took home the championship title with 860 points.  On the women's side, the Saints finished with 392 points, while the Rochester Yellowjackets earned the conference trophy with 865.5 points. 

Dutra earned his first conference title with a first place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.44.  The Glens Falls, NY native outtouched Union's Brian Scarlett who had a time of 54.53. 

Pellerin earned his championship victory in the 500 freestyle in the first session on Friday.  His time of 4:53.90 held off Rochester's Evan Jones (4:54.41) and Adam Herzong (4.55.84).  The Plattsburgh, NY native also posted a second place finish on Saturday in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:07.86.  He was followed by classmate Russ Newton with a time of 17:13.95 for the third place finish. 

Also highlighting the events on Saturday was senior Rob Sibley's second place finish in the 100 breaststroke.  The Hudson, NH native touched with a time of 1:02.19 behind only Julian Schott of Rensselaer, who took home the conference title with a time of 59.62. Sibley, along with Dutra, junior Andrew Hayes and sophomore Alex Root, earned fourth place finishes in the 400 freestyle relay (3:21.87) and the 200 medley relay (1:42.95).  Hayes also added a third place individual finish in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.30. 

On the women's side, sophomore Casey Abribat led the Scarlet and Brown with two third place finishes on the day, including the 100 back with a time of 1:01.64.  The Warwick, NY native followed with a time of 2:11.75 in the 200 back, establishing a new St. Lawrence University record in the event.     

First-year student Katharina Weidhausser also posted two fourth place finishes in the 100 fly (1:01.09) and the 200 free (2:01.41), while junior Chasity Barcomb earned a fourth place finish of her own in the 3m diving event, scoring 299.60 points.

The 2010 Liberty League championships conclude the 2010 portion of the swimming and diving season.  The Saints will get their 2011 calendar underway on Saturday, January 22 in Potsdam, NY against the Bears of Potsdam State.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
