Saints 9th after Day Two of UNYSCSA Championships

Senior captain Chris Woolston earned third and fourth place finishes in Saturday's finals.

Feb. 27: The St. Lawrence University Men's Swimming and Diving Team earned 335 points Saturday, to put them in 9th place after day two of the UNYSCSA Championships in Syracuse, NY. Both senior Chris Woolston and first-year Jason Dutra earned top ten finishes, along with two Saints relay teams.

After earning two NCAA B Cut qualifying times in the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Backstroke, Woolston completed the finals with a 4th place finish in the 200 Yard Free and a 3rd place finish in the 100 Yard Back. The Madison, CT native finished the 200 Yard Free with a time of 1:43.32, and the 100 Yard Back with a time of 52.18.

Dutra followed Woolston in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a 9th place finish, earning a time of 54.31, while sophomore Andrew Hayes took 24th with a time of 56.37. Hayes also picked up a 16th place finish in the 200 Yard Free with a time of 1:47.97.

Junior Rob Sibley swam an impressive 100 Yard Breaststroke, finishing 11th, roughly four tenths faster than his preliminary race, with a time of 1:01.23. Senior Stephen Dally also helped the Saints score points, as he took 21st in the same event with a time of 1:02.55. First-year Greg Obernesser followed Dally in 22nd with a time of 1:03.04.

First-year Elias Schoen had a strong 100 Yard Butterfly, finishing 13th with a time of 53.65, while his teammate Dutra grabbed the 19th spot, dropping almost a second off his preliminary race with a time of 53.74.

Adding to the Saints success, sophomore Russ Newton finished 14th in the 400 Yard IM, dropping two-tenths off his preliminary time to finish in 4:23.64. Junior Jared Pellerin competed in the same event, finishing a second faster than his preliminary race with a time of 4:30.09 to earn him 20th place.

Both Saints relay teams fared well in the finals as well, with the 200 Medley Relay A team, composed of Woolston, Dutra, Obernesser, and Sibley, finishing 9th, just a few tenths faster than their preliminary race with a time of 1:37.31. The Saints ‘B' team, made up of Hayes, Schoen, Dally, and Barone, finished 21st in the same event with a time of 1:40.92.

The Scarlet and Brown 800 Yard Freestyle ‘A' team, made up of Schoen, Pellerin, Newton, and Hayes, also had a successful day, swimming roughly two seconds faster than in the preliminary race to finish 10th with a time of 7:18.67. The ‘B' team, made up of Root, Dally, Obernesser, and Barone also dropped time off their preliminary race, finishing eight seconds faster with a time of 7:25.55.

The Saints will kick off the last day of the UNYSCSA Championships tomorrow morning.
