Powers Earns Personal Best Scores as Saints Fall to Hamilton

Jan. 23: Despite first place finishes from senior Chris Woolston, junior Katy Kozminski, sophomore Katie Spakowski, first-year Casey Abribat, and sophomore Russ Newton, as well as a personal best across the boards for first-year Meg Powers in the diving competition, the St. Lawrence University swimming and diving team fell to Hamilton college in both the men's and women's events Saturday in Clinton, NY. Hamilton's men defeated the Saints, 212-76, while the women earned a 187-109 victory.
The St. Lawrence men now hold an overall record of 2-4, while the women stand at 3-3.
Spakowski opened the individual events, winning the 1650 Yard Freestyle with a time of 19:22.34 and was able to pull through with a third place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle later in the meet with a time of 5:48.34.
Newton also earned gold in the 1650 Yard Freestyle with a time of 17:43.63, while Abribat followed suit in the 50 Yard Backstroke, finishing in 31.13. The Warwick, NY native also took gold in the 100 Yard Backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:06.45.
Powers earned two personal best scores in the 1 mtr. and 3 mtr. diving competitions, earning a score of 166.95 in the first and 172.87 in the second. First-year Chasity Barcomb took third in the 1 mtr. competition with a score of 173.09, and silver in the 3 mtr. competition with a score of 179.10.
Woolston and first-year Jason Dutra put on a show in the 50 Yard Backstroke as they took first and second. Woolston finished with a time of 26.01, while Dutra followed in 26.58. Woolston also finished on top again in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 56.39 .
Kozminski swam impressively in the 100 Yard Freestyle, finishing first with a time of 57.10, while senior Abby Lynch earned third. Kozminski also took second in the 50 Yard Freestyle, as Lynch earned bronze in the 50 Yard Butterfly, with a time of 29.01, as well as in the 100 Yard Butterfly.
Sophomore Molly Lunn had a nice day, picking up two second place finishes in the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 200 Yard IM. Senior Stephen Dally also swam solidly, finishing the day with two third place finishes in the 100 Yard and 50 Yard Breaststrokes.
First-year Elias Schoen ended the day with a third place finish in the 100 Yard Butterfly, while Dutra followed suit in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 23.80.
The women also closed the meet with a second place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:46.15. Junior Hannah Grimes, sophomore Emily Peck, sophomore Brynn Hagen, and Kozminski made up the relay team.
