Saints Sweep Bears on Senior Night

Jan. 15: The St. Lawrence University swimming and diving team swept Potsdam State in both the men's and women's events on senior night in the Augsbury Pool Friday. The women defeated the Bears, 134-100, while the men earned a 123-93 victory.
The men kicked off the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a first place finish, earning a time of 1:43.87. First-year Jason Dutra, senior Stephen Dally, first-year Elias Schoen and first-year Mark Obernesser made up the relay team.
Sophomore Katie Spakowski swam to a number one finish in the 1000 Yard Freestyle for the first individual event of the day. She earned a time of 11:34.34, roughly 30 seconds in front of Potsdam's Hollie Heimer. The New Hartford, NY native also picked up a first place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:41.00.
Sophomore Russ Newton followed suit, sweeping both his events with the top finish in the 1000 Yard Freestyle in 10:32.42, as well as in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:05.78. Alex Root took the number two spot in the 500 Yard Freestyle, roughly ten seconds behind his teammate with a time of 5:15.51.
Junior Rob Sibley caused a major upset in the 50 Yard Freestyle when he topped Edward McIntyre by .2 seconds to win the event in 23:55. Senior Abbey Lynch was able to secure the win in the women's event as well with a time of 26:11, while sophomore Katie Kozminski took second. The duo took first and second again in the 100 Yard Freestyle.
Senior Chris Woolston swept all of his events, winning the
200 Yard IM with a time of 2:06.78,the 100 Yard Freestyle in 49:87 and the 200
Yard Freestyle with a finishing time of 1:49.97. Sophomore
Andrew Hayes also swam to another first place finish in the 100 Yard Backstroke
with a time of 58:31, while teammate Dutra took second.
Sophomore Molly Lunn touched out to a first place finish in the 200 Yard
Freestyle, defeating Potsdam's Brittany Berrus by two seconds with a time of 2:04.49. She also earned silver in the 100 Yard
Butterfly, finishing in 1:04.85.
Sophomore Brynn Hagen earned gold in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:06.00, just .8 seconds in front of teammate first-year Casey Abribat. Senior Stephen Dally continued the trend, winning the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:04.26, while Obernesser earned second. Junior Hannah Grimes returned from a semester abroad to win the same event with a time of 1:15.25.
The Saints took the top three spots in the 1 mtr. diving competition with first-year Chasity Barcomb earning first with a final score of 159.90. First-year Meg Powers took second with a score of 152.13, while senior Susan Garnett rounded out the trio, scoring 133.50. In the 3 mtr. competition , Garnett moved up to second, scoring 151.50.
St. Lawrence heads on the road tomorrow, Saturday, January 16th to take on Hartwick at 1:00 pm.
