Saints Split with Cardinals
April 29: The St. Lawrence University softball team split its non-conference doubleheader with St. John Fisher on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, NY. The Saints dropped the opener, 4-0, before rebounding to win the nightcap by the score of 4-1.
With the split, St. Lawrence moves to 19-11 on the season, while regionally-ranked No. 7 St. John Fisher is now 28-10 overall.
In game two, first-year student Kyle Plimpton improved to 11-5 on the season as she scattered five hits over 7.0 innings and struck out 10 batters. Junior Chelsea Cavellier went 3-for-4, including a homerun, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Rebecca Allen was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while classmates Leslie Stratton and Caroline Kieltyka scored the other runs for the Saints.
St. Lawrence opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning as Cavellier singled to bring Stratton home, and then scored on an RBI double by Allen. In the fifth inning, Cavellier smacked a solo homerun to left field to give her team a 3-0 cushion.
Fisher threatened in the fifth inning when they put a run on the board with back-to-back doubles to bring the score to 3-1. The Saints' defense, however, buckled down to retire the next three batters to control the damage.
The Saints tacked on another insurance run in the sixth when Kieltyka doubled and later scored on senior Chelsea Hanno's single.
In the opener, St. Lawrence errors allowed three unearned runs to cross the plate in first and third innings. Meanwhile, Fisher's pitcher Danielle Leone kept the Saints off the board as she allowed only three hits. Junior captain Elizabeth McGinley took the loss for the Saints as she gave up five hits in 6.0 innings and struck out four.
The Saints will host the Potsdam Bears on Tuesday for a pair of non-conference games before traveling to Troy, NY for the 2012 Liberty League Softball Tournament on Friday.
