Engineers Sweep Saints in Liberty League Opener
St. Lawrence falls to 13-5 on the season with an 0-2 mark in the league, while RPI improves to 12-8 and 2-0 in the conference.
In game one, RPI used a five-run fourth inning en route to an 8-0 win. Junior Gillian McCarthy was 2-for-2 and had four RBIs and scored a run to lead the Engineers. Sophomore Leslie Stratton and junior Lauren Weisbarth had the lone hits for the Saints in the opener with a double and a single, respectively.
Weltzin threw the two-hit shutout and struck out six, while junior Elizabeth McGinley took the loss, falling to 6-2 as she gave up nine hits and six earned runs.
The visitors sharp hitting continued into the second game of the day, as RPI scored eight runs in the first three innings and then exploded for a seven-run fourth inning to put the game away. Senior Sara Heller was 2-for-3, including a homerun and a double, with six RBIs and two runs scored for the Engineers. Junior Chelsea Cavellier and senior Chelsea Hanno had hits for St. Lawrence in game two, while first-year student Brady Cooper scored the run for the Saints on RPI miscues in the fifth inning.
Weltzin improved to 8-5 on the season as she was credited with the win in game two, going 3.0 innings and giving up two hits. Charlene Osmanski pitched 2.0 innings of hitless relief, giving up only one unearned run to earn the save. First-year student Kyle Plimpton suffered the loss for St. Lawrence as she gave up 15 hits in 3.1 innings.
The Saints will look to rebound against Union tomorrow, April 8. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
