Liz McGinley '13 earned the victory on the mound in game 1 against Elmira.

March 28: The St. Lawrence University softball team swept Elmira College in a non-conference double header at Eldridge Park Stadium on Wednesday night.  The Saints won by the scores of 4-1 and 8-5 to improve to 11-3 on the season, while Elmira fell to 4-2.

Junior captain Liz McGinley earned the win on the mound in game one as she scattered four hits, allowed no earned runs and struck out four.  The Canastota, NY native also helped lead the Saints offensive effort as she went 3-for-6 on the day with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Sophomore Leslie Stratton was 4-for-6 with a run scored and two RBIs, while classmate Cailyn Welsh was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs.  Sophomores Caroline Kieltyka and Becky Allen combined for seven runs on the day.

In game one, St. Lawrence capitalized on its opportunities at the plate, scoring two runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings and stranding only three runners on base throughout the game.  Meanwhile, McGinley was in control on the mound as Elmira scored only one run, unearned, in the second inning.

First-year student Kyle Plimpton earned the win in game two as she allowed eight hits, three earned runs and struck out five. Offensively, the Saints were held to only one hit through three innings before they opened the scoring in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.  After tacking on a run in the fifth, the Golden Eagles took advantage of Saint errors to score two runs and cut the lead to 3-2.  St. Lawrence kept the pressure on at the plate as it scored five runs on eight hits in the final two innings to take an 8-2 lead. Though Elmira looked to rally in the seventh inning and cut the deficit down to 8-5, the Saints defense held off for the victory and the series sweep.

St. Lawrence will travel to Potsdam State on Tuesday, April 3, for a non-conference double-header with the Bears.  Game one is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
