Saints Split on Final Day in Florida
March 16: The St. Lawrence University softball team split on its last day at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, FL. The Saints, who finished the week 9-3 overall, opened the day with a 5-0 shutout of St. Joseph's College but fell to Richard Stockton in the second game, 8-0, in six innings.
First-year student Kyle Plimpton earned the shutout on the mound against St. Joseph's as she gave up only three hits, walked three and struck out 17 batters in an impressive outing.
Sophomore Caroline Kieltyka led the Saints offensively on the day as she went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. Classmate Becky Allen was also 2-for-5 with a run scored, while junior Chelsea Cavellier, sophomore Cailyn Welsh and first-year student Aisha O'Connor each went 2-for-6.
St. Lawrence opened the scoring in the third inning against
the Bears when O'Connor laid down a bunt single and later scored on a double by
Stratton. The Saints stretched their
lead on a single by Kieltyka that plated Welsh and Hanno, and junior Lauren
Weisbarth knocked in Kieltyka for the 4-0 advantage.
Allen rounded out the scoring at 5-0 in the fifth inning as reached home base on a double by classmate Khalshia White. Plimpton allowed one hit in the sixth before she struck out the side in the seventh to earn the shutout.
Plimpton continued on the mound into the Richard Stockton game, as junior captain Liz McGinley suffered an ankle injury the day before. The rookie pitcher ran into trouble in the second inning when an RBI single put Stockton on the board. The Ospreys tacked on a few more runs in the third inning before O'Connor entered as relief on the mound in the fourth inning.
Though O'Connor kept the Ospreys off the bases in the fourth inning, Stockton scored five runs over the next two innings, three of them earned, to bring the mercy rule into effect and end the game at 8-0. Stockton pitcher Jamie Gasko held the Saints to only five hit, stranded seven runners on base and struck out six.
Plimpton was credited with the loss as she gave up three runs in 3.0 innings on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. O'Connor allowed three earned runs on six hits in the final innings with three walks and a strikeout.
The Saints will begin their northern schedule at Elmira on March 28. The double-header is set to begin at 3:00pm.
