Engineers Drop Saints in Opening Game of Conference Tournament

May 6: The St. Lawrence University softball team lost the opening game of the 2011 Liberty League Tournament in Albany, NY on Friday afternoon to the top-seeded Engineers of Rensselaer at Cummings Haker Field.
St. Lawrence (11-20) fell behind early, and RPI (26-9) used a seven-run fourth en route to a 17-1 win. Rensselaer's Jen Bach earned the win to improve to 14-3 allowing only two hits in 3.0 innings, while senior captain Rachel Duffany suffered the loss after giving up five runs, only two earned, in 1.2 innings.
The Engineers put up four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning after Bach retired St. Lawrence's first three batters. Gillian McCarthy then added an RBI single in the second to make it 5-0 after two.
The Saints got on the board in the top of the third on an RBI single to center by sophomore Lauren Weisbarth to score sophomore Darcy Buckingham. However, RPI answered with five runs on four hits off of senior captain Meg Goodemote to make it 10-1 after three innings of play.
The Engineers blew the game open in the fourth with seven runs on four hits and an error to bring the game to its final score of 17-1.
McCarthy finished with five RBI's after going 2-for-3 at the plate, while Bach added three RBI's.
St. Lawrence will take on the loser of Friday's second game between Union and Rochester in an elimination battle on Saturday at 10:00am.
