Saint Team, 3 Individuals Advance To IHSA Nationals

Abby Cook won in open on the flat in team competition at Zones on Saturday

St. Lawrence University's riding team qualified as a team to compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association national championship show in Raleigh, NC May 3-6 and the Saints will send three individuals to the national show as well after a strong performance at the Zone II Championships at Skidmore on Saturday.

The Saints finished second to host Skidmore, which had 49 points in the team standings with the top two among the five regional champions in the zone advancing. SLU had 44 points with Sacred Heart finishing third with 28, Cornell fourth with 27 and Stony Brook fifth with 20. The Saints, reserve national champions a year ago, will compete as a team in the IHSA Championship Show for the fourth time in the last five years.

Junior Casey Zuraitis won the individual competition in novice equitation on the flat and will compete as an individual at nationals in that category. She will be joined by zone champion Emily D'Alessandro, who won the individual intermediate on the flat competition and by junior Molly Coryer, who was reserve champion in novice equitation over fences.

In the team competition, Zuraitis won in intermediate on the flat, senior Abby Cook won her class of open on the flat and sophomore Jessie Lewis won in intermediate fences. Senior Tim Moore was second in walk-trot, Anna Heron was third in walk-trot-canter, sophomore Katherine Figueroa was third in novice on the flat, Cook was second in open fences and Grace Seagrave was second in novice fences.

Other individual placings at Zones included a fifth by junior Michelle Harazim in individual walk-trot-canter, a third by senior Taylor Moon in novice flat and a fourth by Cook in individual open on the flat.
