Wolcott, Carpenter Lead Saints in Freestyle Events at Williams

Feb. 20: The St. Lawrence University Nordic ski teams completed competition at the 2010 Williams Carnival on Saturday in Williamstown, MA. The Scarlet and Brown were led by senior Eric Wolcott and sophomore Caroline Carpenter in their respective freestyle events.
Carpenter picked up her second-best showing of the season in the Women's 5K Freestyle with a 22nd place finish. The Shelburne, VT native raced in 15:32.3 to pace her team to eighth place overall with 60.0 points. Carpenter was awarded 22.0 points for her finish.
Joining Carpenter in the scoring for the women's squad was senior Johannah Ludington and sophomore Leah Hart. Ludington picked up a 24th place finish, while Hart closed the scoring in 29th position.
First-year student Kelsey Nichols (42nd) and juniors Sophie Allen (44th) and Elizabeth Hayden (54th) also raced for St. Lawrence in the women's 5K Free.
On the men's side, Wolcott added his fifth top-15 finish of the year with an 11th place showing in the 10K Freestyle. The Concord, NH native finished the race in 26:57.3 to pick up 29.0 points towards the carnival.
Wolcott was again joined by classmates Zach Wetherell and Ben Knowles in the scoring, as they trio totaled 78.0 points for fifth place, only one point shy of fourth. Wetherell and Knowles finished back-to-back in 16th and 17th places, respectively.
Also representing the Saints in the men's race on Saturday were juniors Steven Vargo (41st) and Kyle Marvinney (48th) and sophomore Adam Terko (49th).
Dartmouth College won each of the freestyle events, with the women earning 135.0 points and the men closing with 129.0. The Big Green also swept the individual titles, as Eric Packer won the men's 10K Free in 26:10.5 and Ida Sargent claimed the women's race in 13:52.9.
Both the St. Lawrence men's and women's Nordic ski teams will be in action again next weekend, Friday and Saturday, February 26 and 27, in the 2010 Middlebury Carnival/EISA Championships.
