Saints’ Men’s Squad Earns Podium Finish at UVM Carnival

Feb. 6: St. Lawrence University seniors Eric Wolcott, Zach Wetherell and Ben Knowles each earned top-10 finishes in the 10K Classic at the UVM Carnival on Saturday in Stowe, VT.  The trio combined for 105.0 points to land in third place overall as a team, giving the Scarlet and Brown a podium finish.

Saturday's race was the second straight third place showing for the Saints, who landed on the podium in the 3x3 Sprint Relay at St. Michael's two weeks ago.  Wolcott posted the team's top finish in the 10K Classic with a career-best fourth place showing.  The Concord, NH native raced in 30:07.2, less than four seconds out of third overall.  Wolcott was awarded 41.0 points towards the carnival and 50.0 points towards an NCAA Championship bid.

Wetherell matched his career-best finish in ninth position overall in 30:19.9, while Knowles was one spot behind in 10th to land his fifth career top-10 showing.  The trio's total was only 13 points behind Middlebury College, which won the men's event with 118.0 points.

Junior Steven Vargo (39th), sophomore Teo Jackson (51st) and junior Kyle Marvinney (56th) also raced in the 10K Classic for St. Lawrence on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Saints' women's squad earned 44.0 points total in the Women's 5K Classic to land in 10th place as a team.  Senior Johannah Ludington paced the group in 26th place overall in 17:59.7 to earn 18.0 points towards the carnival.  She was joined in the scoring by sophomores Leah Hart and Caroline Carpenter, who finished 31st and 36th, respectively.

A trio of juniors rounded out the team's line-up on Saturday in the 5K Classic, including Sophie Allen (43rd), Hannah James (45th) and Elizabeth Hayden (69th).

Franz Bernstein of the University of Vermont won the men's race in 29:29.7, while Dartmouth's Ida Sargent won the women's event in 16:27.1.  Sargent's finish also paced the Big Green to the team title in the 5K Classic with an impressive 135.0 points.

The Saints will compete on the final day of the 2010 UVM Carnival tomorrow, Sunday, February 7 in the freestyle events.
