Senior Trio Earns Podium Finish in 3x3 Sprint Relay

Jan. 23: The St. Lawrence University men's Nordic ski team's senior trio of Ben Knowles, Eric Wolcott and Zach Wetherell earned a podium finish on Saturday at the 2010 St. Michael's Carnival at Sleepy Hollow XC Center. The group finished in third place overall in the Men's 3x3 Sprint Relay to land the Saints' first podium showing of the season.
The men's team finished with 96.0 points for their finish, while the women's team's top group of sophomores Leah Hart and Caroline Carpenter and senior Johannah Ludington was 11th in the 3x3 Sprint Relay, earning 46.0 points and finishing 9th in the team standings.
Wetherell skied the first leg of the men's race before Knowles took over the second leg. Wolcott, who has had a solid start to the 2010 season, then anchored the trio en route to the finish line. They finished with a combined time of 31:19.6, while Middlebury's Graham Egan, Chase Marston and Doug DeBold won the event in 30:51.4.
St. Lawrence's second team in the men's competition finished in 33:09.5 to earn 14th position. The unit was comprised of sophomore Teo Jackson and juniors Kyle Marvinney and Steven Vargo.
Hart, who logged a career-best finish in the Freestyle race on Friday, was the lead leg on the women's side for the Saints' top women's trio and Carpenter handled the middle stretch of the Sprint Relay. Ludington then closed the race for her team, combining times in 39:42.6 for 11th place and 46.0 points.
St. Lawrence was also represented in the women's event by the junior trio of Sophie Allen, Elizabeth Hayden and Hannah James, who were 20th overall in 41:58.2.
Dartmouth College captured the women's race in 37:22.2 with a team comprised of Stephanie Crocker, Erika Flowers and Katie Bono.
The Saints' Nordic teams will have next weekend off before returning to action at the 2010 UVM Carnival on February 6 and 7.
