Saints Finish 7th in Freestyle Events at St. Michael’s Carnival

Senior Ben Knowles finished in 9th place overall in the Men's 15K Free.

Jan. 22: Both the St. Lawrence University men's and women's Nordic ski teams finished in 7th place overall on Friday afternoon in the Freestyle events at the 2010 St. Michael's Carnival at the Sleepy Hollow XC Center. 

The Saints' men's team was led by a pair of top-10 finishes by the senior duo of Ben Knowles and Eric Wolcott.  Knowles earned his fourth collegiate top-10 by landing in 9th position overall out of 91 skiers in a time of 43:21.2 in the Men's 15K Free.  The Cumberland, ME native's finish earned his team 31.0 points, while Knowles was also credited with 29 points towards NCAA's.

Wolcott's 10th place finish, which came in 43:39.5 and netted 30.0 points, was the skier's second top-10 of the young carnival season.  The Saints' scoring was completed by junior Steven Vargo in 36th position in 45:34.0, bringing the team's total to 76.0 points.

Also representing St. Lawrence on Friday in the men's race were sophomore Teo Jackson (60th, 47:20.6), senior Zach Wetherell (61st, 47:29.4), junior Kyle Marvinney (63rd, 47:37.4) and sophomores Adam Terko (65th, 47:50.5) and Ben Ogden (77th, 50:15.0).

Senior Johannah Ludington, fresh off of a career-best finish last weekend, earned her third career top-15 finish with a time of 32:49.3 in the Women's 10K Free.  The Morrisville, VT native's 15th place showing earned the Scarlet and Brown's women's squad 27.0 points, while sophomore Leah Hart followed one spot back in 16th place after being clocked in only one second behind her teammate.

Sophomore Caroline Carpenter rounded out the scoring in 31st place in 33:52.6, lifting the women's team's total to 69.0 points and into 7th position.

Other St. Lawrence skiers competing in the Women's 15K Free included first-year student Kelsey Nichols (47th, 34:54.8), juniors Hannah James (61st, 36:06.3), Sophie Allen (64th, 36:18.3) and Elizabeth Hayden (73rd, 37:37.0) and rookie Margaret Fellows (80th, 38:20.8).

Dartmouth College won both freestyle events on Friday, with the men earning 110.0 points to edge UVM by 2.0 while the women won handedly with 135.0 points.  Both individual winners were also members of the Big Green, as Nils Koons earned the men's title in 42:02.7 while Erika Flowers (31:10.9) was victorious in the women's competition.

The St. Lawrence University Nordic teams will race again tomorrow, Saturday, January 23rd in the 3x3 Sprint Relays.
