Samaroo 2nd in Long Jump, DMR 3rd at State Meet

Feb. 22: Jamal Samaroo placed second and the St. Lawrence University Distance Medley Relay team was third to highlight day one of competition at the 2013 New York State Collegiate Track Conference Indoor Championships at Ithaca College on Friday.

While much of Friday’s competition centered around preliminaries for Saturday’s finals, the Saints got off to a good start and are fourth after day one. RIT leads with 42 points followed by Rochester with 39, RPI with 38 and the Saints with 24.

Samaroo jumped 6.77 meters, leading the first flight and finishing second to RIT’s Marquis Moore who won the event at 7.01 meters. The DMR of Scott Smolensky, Nick Crawford, Jon Eng and Spencer Patterson combined to run 10:10.08 for their third place finish.

In other Friday finals, Scott Kasson finished sixth in the shot put with a 13.75 meter throw, Brendan Courneene was seventh in the 5000 with a 15:34.42 clocking and the 4x200 team of Samaroo, Omaru Kabia, Vince Maniscalco and Andy Fisher finished third in 1:32.49.

Maniscalco is seventh with 2390 points after four events in the heptathlon, which will be completed Saturday morning. In preliminary heats on Friday, AFisher advanced in the 200 with a time of 23.10, Jake Fredericks advanced in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.53 seconds, Nick Crawford advanced in the 400 with a 51.31 clocking and Omaru Kabia made the finals in the 60 meter dash, winning his heat in 7.10 seconds.
