Saints Will Play Hobart for 3rd in Liberty League on Sunday

St. Lawrence University's men's tennis team will play for third place in the 2011 Liberty League Championships at the Newell Field House Sunday morning after splitting matches in day one of the tournament on Saturday.

The Saints, seeded fourth in the tournament, turned back fifth seed Union 6-3 in their opening match, but lost to top seed Skidmore 9-0 in the semifinals. The Saints will take on Hobart, which edged Rensselaer 5-4 in the quarterfinals, but lost to second seed Vassar 9-0 in the semifinals. The Saints and Hobart will square off at 10 a.m. on Sunday in the Newell Field House while Skidmore and Vassar will play for the league championship at the same time on the Sammis Tennis Courts.

In Saturday's match against Union, the Saints took two of three doubles matches as the number one team of Michael Hayden and Tony Wilkey won 8-6 and the number two team of Will Cook and Ren Gates won 8-2.

Wilkey beat Dan Nault 6-2, 6-2, Hayden was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Saul Kurtz, Gates was a three set winner at third singles and Cook came back from a first set loss to win at fourth singles in the quarterfinal win over Union.

Skidmore, ranked ninth in the Northeast and 30th nationally, swept the doubles as Hayden and Wilkey and Gates and Cook were beaten 8-4 and the team of Chris Rogers and Tom Timpone lost 8-1 and swept the singles in straight sets.

The Saints take a 7-9 record into Sunday's Hobart match.
