Saints Open Season 2-1 in Flower City Tournament

Sept. 14: The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team opened the 2010-11 fall season 2-1 at the Flower City Tournament in Rochester.
Sophomore Philip Jackley, who earned Liberty League "Co-Performer
of the Week" honors for his efforts on the weekend, went 3-0 at third singles, defeating opponents from
Robert Wesleyan, RIT, and Nazareth College.
The Wayzata, MN native, alongside doubles partner Tony Wilkey also went
3-0 in the no. 1 position at the tournament last weekend.
The Saints dropped their first dual match against Robert Wesleyan 4-5. Although they had a 2-1 lead after doubles play, Robert Wesleyan went on to win four of the six singles matches to claim the dual. The No.1 doubles team of sophomore Philip Jackley and senior Tony Wilkey won 8-5, as did the No. 2 team of seniors Ren Gates and Will Cook. The No. 3 team of sophomore Michael Hayden and first-year Matt Burke lost by a tight 6-8 margin. The only Saints to win in singles play were Hayden and Jackley who won 7-6 (5), 6-1 and 6-4, 6-0 respectively.
In the second dual match of the tournament, the Saints defeated the RIT Tigers 5-1. Jackley and Wilkey defeated their opponents 8-2 in No. 1 doubles play. No. 3 doubles team of Hayden and Burke also won their match 8-5. Wilkey, Hayden and Jackley won their matches in singles play to help St. Lawrence defeat RIT in the second dual match of the weekend.
In the third match, St. Lawrence swept Nazareth College in doubles play en route to their 5-0 victory. Hayden, Jackley, and Cook also defeated their opponents in singles play as the Saints handily defeated the Golden Flyers in their final match of the Flower City Tournament.
The St. Lawrence men's tennis team will be back in action next weekend as they host the SLU Fall Classic.
