Saints Compete in Final Day of SLU Fall Classic

Sept. 15-16:  The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team completed day two of the SLU Fall Classic on Sunday.  The Saints, who are 2-1 on the season, will be back in action on Sept. 28 and 29 when they compete at the ITA Championships in Ithaca, NY.

First-year student Robert Schmitz battled Ryan McCormick (Nazareth) in the semifinal of the A flight, but fell by the scores of 6-2, 6-1.  On Saturday, he defeated Boris Borovcanain (Rochester), 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round and then followed with a 6-1, 0-6, 14-12 victory over Jordan Petit in the quarterfinal.

In C Flight singles, sophomore Sam Mullin took on David Wolf (Rochester) in the semifinal, falling 6-4, 6-1.  He came out victorious in two tight matches on Saturday.  The first was against Jonathan Lieb (Rochester) 7-5, 7-6 (3), and then against Jonathan Smucker (Ithaca) 7-6 (6), 7-5. 

Sophomore Alan Shortz and senior Tom Timpone represented St. Lawrence in the semifinals of B flight doubles.  Ian Antonoff and Ben Stern (Hamilton) topped the duo by the score of 8-3.  On Saturday, Shortz and Timpone defeated Kyle Riether and David Kelz (Ithaca) 8-3 in the opening round before knocking off Ken Chou and Jake Stocker (RIT) 9-8 (5).
