Saints Third at Flower City with 5-4 Victory Over Red Dragons

Sep. 9: The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team capped its season-opening weekend with a 5-4 victory over Oneonta State to take third place at the Flower City Tournament in Rochester, NY. Senior Tom Timpone clinched the win for the Saints when his opponent retired down 4-0 in the third set.
St. Lawrence, which improved to 2-1 on the season, had an impressive weekend in doubles play, winning 7-of-9 matches en route to the third place finish. First-year student Paul Barrett led the Saints with two wins on the day. He teamed up with senior captain Michael Hayden to earn an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, then came out victorious in a tight 7-5, 7-5 decision at No. 4 singles.
Also earning a victory in doubles for the Saints were first-year student Will Ballew and sophomore Thomas Luchars, who topped their opponent 8-5 at No. 3. First-year student Robert Schmitz earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles, while Timpone rounded out the Saints' scoring at No. 6 when his opponent retired due to cramps with the score at 4-6, 7-6 (7), 4-0.
St. Lawrence will look to continue its outstanding start to the 2012-13 season when it hosts the SLU Fall Classic this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 & 16 on the Sammis Tennis Courts.
