Seniors Lead Saints to Win Over Southwestern, 2-0

Oct. 18: In their second and final contest in Texas this weekend, the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team used lessons learned from their 5-1 loss to No. 1 Trinity Friday afternoon and their senior class to surge past Southwestern University en route to a 2-0 shutout in San Antonio, TX early Saturday.

The Saints improve to 9-6-0 in the season while Southwestern falls to 6-8-0 with the loss.

Scoring for St. Lawrence was senior Kiel Dwyer (Warwick, RI/Toll Gate H.S.), who had the game winning goal, and classmate and co-captain Paul LaMarca (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain). Seniors Ryan Moore (Keene, NH/Keene) and Dan Quitt (Ellicott, MD/John Jay) each added an assist.

The Scarlet and Brown held an 11-4 advantage in shots in the first half but was unable to sneak anything past Pirate keeper Ryan Tasin in the opening 45 minutes of play, as they keeper made three saves to keep the score knotted at zero for both squads.

It wasn't until the end of the 64th minute that Dwyer tallied the eventual game winning goal after receiving the ball from Moore. LaMarca's goal came less than ten minutes later in the 74th minute after it was played to him from the midfield. The senior shot a low ball to the corner where it hit the post and went in to give the Saints the insurance goal for the win.

St. Lawrence controlled the flow of play as they outshot the Pirates 20-9. Saints keeper and co-captain Emilio Coletta (Montreal, QC/Marianapolis College) had two saves while Tasin recorded five.

"I was very happy with our guys this entire weekend," said Head Coach Bob Durocher. "Both Trinity and Southwestern are good teams and it was great that we were able to come down here and play everyone on the team."

The Saints look ahead to an exciting Liberty League series at home next weekend as they are set to host Union and Skidmore on Sandy MacAllaster Field. St. Lawrence will face the Dutchmen on Saturday, October 25 with the game scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
