Saints Have Strong Performances at Ithaca

Apr. 11: The St. Lawrence University men's crew team enjoyed a successful day on the water on Saturday as the varsity and novice crew teams competed against Ithaca and Hamilton Colleges on the Cayuga Inlet, where the teams raced a 2000-meter piece.

In the men's varsity eight race, Ithaca won the event with a time of 6:41.4, while the Saints crew finished with a time of 6:58.7, defeating Hamilton by more than ten seconds as the Continentals crossed the finish line with a time of 7:08.8.

The boat contained sophomore David MacClaren (Madison, CT/Stratton Mountain School), senior Andrew Kraus (Devon, PA/Westtown), senior Matt Sonagere (Auburn, ME/Edward Little), senior Seth Corliss (Castleton, VT/Fair Haven Union), senior Mike Syslo (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's School), sophomore Nick Blum (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East), senior Jullian Holland (Falls Village, CT/Housatonic Valley Regional), senior Liam Delahanty (Francestown, NH/Conval Regional) and sophomore coxswain Allison Webster (Lincoln, MA).

The Saints' novice crew continued its winning ways and defeated both Ithaca and Hamilton in the men's novice eight event, finishing with a time of 6:56.9, well ahead of the Bombers' time of 7:12.7 and Hamilton's final time of 7:53.8.

St. Lawrence's novice crew included first years Justin Painter (Kattskill Bay, NY/Northwood), Will Schrade (Slingerlands, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), Brent Underwood (Slovang, CA/Santa Ynez Valley Union), Jamie Cook (Madison, CT/The Williams School), Michael MacNeil (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy), Jon Williams (Higganum, CT/Kent School), Griffin Green (Buffalo, NY/Hutchinson Central Tech), Justin Raffaeli (Pound Ridge, CT/Kent School) and rookie coxswain Mike Cianca (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Southerland).

The men also competed in the men's third varsityeight competition, placing second in between two Ithaca crews. Ithaca's 'A' crew finished with a time of 7;25.2, while the Saints clocked in at 7:35.5. The Bombers' 'B' crew rowed to an 8:05.8 finish. The boat included Sonagere, Kraus, sophomore Cam West (New Britain, CT/Avon Old Farms), junior Brendan Kiniry (Walpole, NH/Vermont Academy), rookie Iain Hart (Duluth, MN/East High School), sophomore Jose Colagrossi (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), sophomore Greg Gotta (Northbridge, MA/St. John's), sophomore Brendan McGrath (Hingham, MA) and sophomore Alyssa Halton (Ithaca, NY/Lansing).

"I was very impressed with each of our crews today," said Saints Head Coach George Repicky. "We race Hamilton about three or four times every year and I was happy to see such a strong showing from our varsity crew in that event, defeating Hamilton by more than 10 seconds. [Hamilton] is a good crew and will prepare us both for Liberty Leagues and States."

The Saints will continue competition next weekend in preparation of hosting the Liberty League Championships in Waddington the following weekend. The Scarlet and Brown will travel to Hamilton and Union on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, respectively.
