Novice 8+ Victorious at Head of the Fish

Oct. 28: The St. Lawrence University men's Novice 8+ finished first out of 30 boats at the 2012 Head of the Fish collegiate race in Saratoga, NY.
The win came thanks to a time of 11:23.90, over 13 seconds ahead of second-place Williams College. UMass-Amherst, Colgate, Maritime and Marist followed as well.
"After having a tough race at the Head of the Genesee, it was great to see the novice men put it together at the Fish and close out the fall season strong," said St. Lawrence head coach George Repicky.
The Novice 8+ was stroked by Travis Galowski, while Lauren Ward was the coxswain. Other competitors for St. Lawrence in the winning boat were Justin Dalaba, Ryder Thompson, Dan Tobin, Chester Hojnicki, Jack Riordan, Steve Grow and Sam Pratt.
The varsity 8+ was 15th overall out of 21 in its competition at the Head of the Fish, defeating the University of Albany and UMass-Lowell. Shelby Hang served as coxswain, while Francis Stripp stroked the boat. Other Saint rowers in the varsity boat included Phil Hodosy, Mike Brewer, Drew Twitchell, Andy Caswell, Tom Joyce, Ted Marr and Evan Pierce.
"This was a better row for the varsity and they felt good coming off the water," added Coach Repicky. "We rowed it too low at a 28, but that's just where we're at with our technical progress with such a young crew."
The novice 4+ was fourth overall out of 13, while the varsity 4+ was 23rd of 30 in their respective races. The novice 4+ included Ward, Mike Lynskey, Tobin, Mark Persij and Dalaba. The varsity 4+ was comprised of coxswain Amy Yao, Stripp, Twitchell, Pierce and Talon Lomahquahu.
The St. Lawrence men's crew team will continue training throughout the winter for the spring portion of its schedule, which gets underway on March 16 at the Mayor's Cup in Tampa, FL.
