Jones Meets Automatic Qualification in Weight Throw

Eric Jones finished second in the weight throw, meeting NCAA automatic qualification at the Syracuse Invitational at Manley Field House on Saturday, the top finish for a Saint athlete in the meet.

The Saints rested many of their regulars Saturday to prepare for the Liberty League Championships which will be held at the Newell Field House Feb. 13 beginning at 11 a.m.

Jones threw 18.76 meters (61-6.75) his best throw of the season and second nationally among Division III competitors thus far this season. Sophomores Justin Spalik, Andrew Goodwin and Sean Scott had the other top ten finishes for the Saints in the Syracuse meet.

Spalik won his heat in the preliminaries of the 55 hurdles in 8.05 seconds and placed sixth in the final with a time of 8.06 seconds. Goodwin was eighth overall in the 800 meters in 1:57.61 and Scott finished either in the triple jump with a 12.69 meter(41-7.75) mark.

Mike Scott finished 12th in the high jump and Sean Scott was 12th in the long jump in other field events for the Saints.

Leif Frymire won his heat and finished 12th overall in the 400, running 52.43 whil eTim Liponis was 24th in the mile in 4:38.30, Ian Scofield was 23rd in the 3000 in 9:13.25 and Jordan Garfinkle finished 19th in the 500 meters in 1:10.76.
