DeMello, Laird Named ECAC Offensive, Defensive Players of the Year

St. Lawrence University juniors Sam DeMello and Alex Laird were named the ECAC Upstate Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year and were among five Saints named to the 2011 ECAC Division III Upstate Men's Soccer All Star team as announced Wednesday.
DeMello and Laird, who each won the same awards for the Liberty League, were both first-team All America selections. DeMello set a St. Lawrence record with 38 points and figured in 11 game winning-goals during his junior season. Laird helped the Saints lead the nation in scoring defense, holding the opposition to six goals in 20 games.
Joining Laird and DeMello on the ECAC all star team were sophomore midfielder Andrew Bednarsky, senior back Mike Manfredi and senior goalkeeper Brian Abernethy. The Saints had five first team selections and Oneonta State, who edged the Saints in overtime in the NCAA Sectionals, had three first team selections and two second team choices.
