Saints Finish Season with 6-2 Win at Clarkson

Oct. 31: The conditions were scary on Halloween afternoon, but Joey Mattina helped St. Lawrence University's men's soccer team came away with the treats as they scored three unanswered second half goals to down arch-rival Clarkson 6-2 and finish the 2009 season on an up-note.
The Saints snapped a five-game winless streak with Saturday's victory which came despite weather conditions which were far from ideal. SLU finishes the year 8-6-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the Liberty League.
The Saints started the game with the wind at their back and took advantage by sending long passes into the Clarkson end. None of those passes paid off initially, as the Saints' first goal came off a corner with freshman Alex Laird scoring his fourth of the season off a double deflection in front at 14:31 with Reed Carr assisting with the corner kick.
Freshman Sam DeMellow made it a 2-0 game with his sixth of the season from Joey Mattina at 31:24, but Clarkson responded just under five minutes later when Brody Boomer scored his second of the year with a header off a cross following a corner kick.
It took the Saints just 32 seconds to answer that goal as Mattina put his second of the year past Clarkson goalie Adam Lamoreaux, making a quick run after taking a pass from Brendan Gorman and rifling a shot just under the crossbar.Mattina finished the game with two goals and three assists for seven points, one short of the Saint record for points in a game..
Clarkson came back to make it a 3-2 game when Mark Secko scored his sixth of the year on a header off a direct kick with 2:06 to play in the first half, but the Saints put the game away against the wind in the second half.
Reed Carr made it a 4-2 game just 2:31 into the second half as he took a pass from Mattina and scored his second of the year and it went to 5-2 at 59:29 as Mattina scored his second of the game after taking Mike Manfredi's pass and putting it past Lamoreaux on the ground. Brendan Gorman completed the scoring with his league-leading 12th goal of the season, taking his own rebound and putting it back into the net at 66:20 with Mattina picking up the record-setting assist on the play.
Nate Goss-Woliner earned the win for the Saints, making three saves while Lamoreaux and Scott Stuart combined for eight saves for the Golden Knights. SLU finished with a 24-14 overall edge in shots and had a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
