Child Is ECAC Rookie of the Week

St. Lawrence sophomore Pete Child has been named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week after his performance in the weekend series against Sacred Heart.
Child did not play in any games as a freshman, making him eligible for rookie honors this season. He scored his first collegiate goal in a 6-3 win over Sacred Heart on Friday and went on to add two more goals in that game, becoming the first Saint defenseman to score a hat trick since the 1960s and one of few in program history to accomplish that feat. He is also one of the few players in Saint history to have a hat trick on the night that he scored his first collegiate goal.
He also had an assist on the game-tying goal in the 3-3 tie with the Pioneers on Saturday.
Child is the second Saint player to earn ECAC Rookie of the Week honors. Forward Kyle Flanagan was named Rookie of the Week after a weekend sweep of RIT and Niagara. Flanagan, who had a goal and three assists in the weekend series against Sacred Heart, was a nominee for Player of the Week.
Flanagan leads the Saints in scoring with four goals and six assists for 10 points in seven games, the best start for a freshman this decade, while Child is averaging a point per game with three goals and four assists in the first seven games of the season.
The Saints will open ECAC league competition this weekend, playing at Princeton (7 p.m. Friday) and Quinnipiac (4 p.m. Saturday).
