St. Lawrence University men's hockey coach Joe Marsh was designated the first Charles W. Appleton II Hockey Coach at St. Lawrence in May of 1997, becoming one of few coaches nationally to hold an endowed coaching position in the sport of ice hockey. He completed his 26th season as Saint coach in 2010-11 and is just the third Division I coach to win 400 or more games all at the same institution. He has also taught in the University's First Year Program in each of the last four years.
He was also the runner-up for the Spencer Penrose Award as NCAA Division I Coach of the Year after the 2006-07 and won the Tim Taylor Award as ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year for an unprecidented fourth time.. He coached his 12th 20-or-more win season in 2008-09.
The Appleton coaching position was established by friends of the late Charles W. Appleton II, a member of the class of 1960, who was one of the University's long-time hockey fans and supporters. The Appleton endowment is one of five in the ECAC. Cornell, Colgate, Yale and Harvard also have endowed coaching positions.

Mike Hurlbut returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach to start the 2002-2003 season, became a full-time assistant in 2008-09 and was named Associate Head Coach in the spring of 2011.
A first-team All America and a first team All ECAC selection for the Saints in 1989 and a member of the two winning-est teams in Saint hockey history in 1988 and 1989, Mike is a 1989 graduate of St. Lawrence and had a long and successful professional hockey career. He spent 14 years in the International and American hockey leagues and played 29 games, scoring one goal and assisting on eight others, in the National Hockey League.
He was selected to play in three American Hockey League All Star Games, was named a second team AHL All Star in 1994-95 and was the longest serving captain in Rochester Americans' franchise history, wearing the "C" for five seasons. He was a team captain in eight of his 13 pro seasons.
Among the teams he played for were the Houston Aeros, Minnesota Moose, Binghamton Rangers and the Rochester Americans. He played 23 games with the New York Rangers in 1992-93 and also had NHL appearances with the Quebec Nordique and the Buffalo Sabres.

Former St. Lawrence University hockey captain Greg Carvel, a Canton native, has been appointed assistant men's hockey coach at his alma mater, completing the Saint staff after the departure of Bob Prier to become head coach at Princeton University.
Carvel has most recently been assistant coach of the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League and has 15 years of professional hockey experience. He began his professional hockey career as director of hockey operations for the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League and joined the Anaheim Ducks as scouting coordinator in May of 1999. He added video coaching duties to his title in Anaheim in 2002 and was promoted to assistant coach in August of 2003. He joined the Senators in August of 2004.
Carvel graduated from St. Lawrence with a bachelor's degree in political science and mathematics in 1993 and was named the ECAC's Best Defensive Forward award winner as a senior. He earned ECAC all rookie team honors as a freshman and was captain of the 1992-93 team. Carvel led the team in scoring as a senior with 14 goals and 34 assists for 48 points and finished his career with 37 goals and 87 assists for 124 points in 124 career games. He was the winner of the Brian P. Doyle Memorial Trophy as a senior. An outstanding student-athlete, he was the Kevin Dougherty Memorial Scholarship winner in 1989 and is one of only three players to win the Brian McFarlane Award for academic and hockey accomplishment three times during his career. He also earned Academic All America honors.
- Assistant Hockey Coach
Mike Elberty joins the St. Lawrence staff as an assistant coach after spending three years in a volunteer assistant capacity where he was involved in a variety of hockey duties with a focus on strength and conditioning.
Last season along with his volunteer coaching position at St. Lawrence he also worked as the GM/Coach of the 1000 Islands privateers a single A professional team in the Federal Hockey League.
Prior to returning to Canton in 2008 he trained professional and division 1 hockey players in Rochester N.Y. developing specific on ice skill systems and dryland training and performance programs. Coaching experience dates back to the 1980s when he started coaching at the High School and Prep School levels.
