Saints Finish Second in Liberty League Championship

St. Lawrence University senior Ben von Reyn followed up an even-par round of 72 with a 75 on Sunday for a 147 total and a tie for fifth to help St. Lawrence University to a second-place finish in the 2009 Liberty League Golf Championships at the St. Lawrence University Golf Course. Skidmore lit things up in Sunday's round and ran away with the team title.
All five Skidmore players shot par or better in Sunday's final round of the 36-hole tournament to pull away from the host Saints for their third straight league championship.
Skidmore's four-man total on Sunday was a 281, seven strokes under par and the Thoroughbreds finished with a two-day total of 573, 33 strokes better than second place St. Lawrence which finished with a 606 total. Rochester was third at 613 followed by Rensselaer at 622, Hobart at 633, Clarkson at 642 and the US Merchant Marine Academy at 729.
Skidmore sophomore Peter Anderson shot the low round of the tournament with a 68 on Sunday and shared the tournament medalist honors and Liberty League Player of the Year title with senior teammate Chris DeJohn, who shot back-to-back rounds of 71 as both players finished at 142. Skidmore went 22-under par as a team on the par fives and had a total of 36 birdies in the tournament.
Sophomore Ren O'Connor was the Saints' second finisher with round of 72 and 77 for a 149 total and was tied for seventh. Freshman Jeff Duggan shot 78-75-153 and tied for 13th while sophomore Adrian Bouthot shot 77 and 80 for a 157 total and was tied for 19th. John Harris was the fifth Saint scorer and shot 82-80 for a 162 total, tying for 25th. Senior Chris Mudge, playing as an individual, shot 74-81 for a 155 total and finished tied for 16th in the 43 player field while freshman Walker Steers shot 80 and 77 for a 157 total and was tied for 19th.
DeJohn, Anderson, Joseph Flowers and Matt Canavan of Skidmore were joined on the Liberty League first team all star team by von Reyn and Eric Fritz of RPI, who shot 73-74 to tie von Reyn for fifth. The second team includes Jon Tedesco of Clarkson, Dasilva of RPI, O'Connor of SLU, Jeff Mayo of Hobart and Marc Youngentob of Rochester. Youngentob was the top freshman finisher and earned Rookie of the Year honors with a tie for tenth.
