Jeff Duggan tied for 15th in the SLU Invitational and shot even par in round one.

Sept. 13: Garrett Rank, the younger brother of former St. Lawrence University golf All America and hockey captain Kyle Rank, shot a 69 on Sunday and earned medalist honors at the 13-team St. Lawrence University Golf Invitational at the St. Lawrence Golf Course.

Rank, who opened with a 74 on the par-72 course on Saturday, had the low round of the tournament with his 69 and had one of two sub-par rounds in the 36-hole event, joining Brady Yates of St. John Fisher who shot 71 in the opening round on Saturday. Rank led his Waterloo University team to the team title with a team score of 593 with St. John Fisher finishing second, five strokes back as the top US team in the tournament.

The University of Rochester was third, New York University fourth and St. Lawrence, which was tied with St. John Fisher for second overall after round one, faded to fifth.

Senior Ben von Reyn  and rookie Jeff Duggan led the Saints with 153 totals, von Reyn shooting 78 and 75 while Duggan shot even-par 72 on Saturday and an 83 on Sunday.  The Saint duo tied for 15th in the 68-golfer field.

Rookie John Harris shot rounds of 74 and 80 for a 154 total and tied for 20th while sophomore Adrian Bouthot shot 78 and 80 and finished tied for 33rd. Chris Mudge was the fifth Saint golfer and shot 83-84-167 for a tie for 59th. Tommy Ferguson shot 82-86-168 and was 61st and Kyle Anderson shot back-to-back rounds of 85 to tie for 62nd as individual entries.

"We're a young team and a couple players are coming off illness, so we are going to have up and down days at times," said Saint coach Mary Lawrence. "We had a great day on Saturday with a 302, so we know what we are capable of doing. Sunday was a little tougher, but it was an excellent tournament and the competition was high-level."

All four Saint scorers shot in the 70s on Saturday, led by Duggan's 72 which tied for the second best individual round of the opening day. The Saints and St. John Fisher each trailed Waterloo by four strokes after round one.

The Saint men will return to action at Williams next weekend.
