Chris Phelps '91 has been named the head coach at Salisbury Prep School in Salisbury, CT.

Apr. 13: St. Lawrence University head football coach Chris Phelps, who has been on the Saints' sideline since the 2001 season, has accepted the head coach position at Salisbury Prep School in Salisbury, CT.  In his nine seasons, Phelps increased the number of participants in the program and recruited some outstanding student-athletes.

"We sincerely appreciate the contributions Chris (Phelps) has made to the University and our athletic department, and he and his family will certainly be missed in Canton. He has worked hard for the football program, which competes in a very competitive small college conference," said St. Lawrence University Director of Athletics, Margie Strait.  "He has been a collaborative mentor for our student-athletes and his staff.  We wish him all the best in his new position, and thank him and his family for their contributions over to the years to the St. Lawrence and Canton communities."

Eight of Coach Phelps' players were awarded 2009 Liberty League All-Conference honors last fall, and senior captain Gerard Bryant was named the 2010 Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-America.  In 2006, Phelps' squad posted a 5-4 record, the first winning mark for the football program in 15 years.  Phelps, a native of Laconia, NH and 1991 graduate of St. Lawrence, finishes his tenure as head coach with a record of 21-66.

"I have enjoyed my experience here at St. Lawrence University, and have had the privilege to work with some great young men who have created memories I'll never forget," said Coach Phelps.  "I'm looking forward to this new chapter in my life as the head coach at Salisbury.  Upon our visit there, my wife and I were very impressed by the people, its academic environment and its long athletic history."

Strait added, "We will look to begin a national search in the near future for a new head coach for the football program. We hope to attract a strong field of candidates and name the new head coach by mid-June."
