Oct. 23: St. Lawrence University senior captain Gerard Bryant has been selected to represent St. Lawrence, Division III football, and the United States in the Tazon de Estrellas, or Bowl of the Stars, in Mexico.  The game pits the best American Division III football players against the Monterrey Tech Stars on Saturday, December 19.

Bryant, a First Team All-American in 2008 and stand-out defensive tackle, will play for "Team Stars & Stripes," which will be coached by Widener's Bill Manlove.  Other coaches on the United States team's staff include Don DeWaard (Central College), Dean Paul (Ohio Northern University), Jim Lyall (Adrian College), Jim Barnes (Augustana College), Brad Spencer (North Central College), Todd Glaser (University of Wisconsin Eau Claire) and Regis Scafe (John Carroll University).

"Playing in the Bowl of the Stars will be an incredible experience for Gerard (Bryant) and I'm excited for his selection," said St. Lawrence University head football coach Chris Phelps.

The traveling group of 50 players, 8 coaches and support staff will practice at the Tec Monterrey facility near Mexico City from December 14 to 18 and will also visit the Aztec Pyramids and the nation's capital before facing their Mexican opponents on December 19.

Tec Monterrey is the premier private university system in Mexico, with campuses in numerous locations around the country. Tec teams have captured eight of the past ten Liga Major football national championships.
