Saints Keep Playoff Hopes Alive, Top Union 3-1
Oct. 22: The St. Lawrence University field hockey team kept its playoff hopes alive on Saturday afternoon thanks to a 3-1 victory over Union College in Schenectady, NY. Junior Ashley Ferenczy scored two goals including the game-winner while sophomore goalie Nicole Matos made nine saves.
The Saints, now 2-4 in conference and 8-7 overall, will clinch the No. 4 seed in the Liberty League Tournament if William Smith defeats Rochester this evening. The Herons and Yellowjackets begin at 6:00pm, while Vassar is eliminated from post-season competition. Meanwhile, Union falls to 2-13 (0-6).
St. Lawrence took the lead on Saturday, 1-0, at the 19:25 mark in the first half. Senior Taylor Vogt passed the ball to the front of the Union net off a corner to set up Ferenczy, who scored her fifth goal of the season.
Despite being outshot 12-3 and trailing 9-2 in penalty corners in the opening stanza, the Dutchwomen would rally to tie the score at 1-1 before intermission. Kesey MacElroy chipped a short pass in front of Matos and Isabel Zellweger finished with her sixth goal of the year at 24:19 to level the scoring.
Needing the victory, St. Lawrence delivered back-to-back clutch goals approximately 10 minutes apart to seize control of the game. Ferenczy would put the Scarlet and Brown back on top, 2-1, at 53:39 with an unassisted goal. The Williamsville, NY native fired a long shot from just inside the circle that beat Union netminder Molly McCune for her sixth goal of the year.
Junior Courtney Cartier would tack on an insurance goal at 64:10 to put the game away for the Saints. The Hudson Falls, NY native pounced on a rebound in front of McCune for her third goal of the year to solidify her team's win.
Though St. Lawrence was outshot 13-8 in the second half, it did finish with a 20-16 edge in total shots. The Saints also closed with a 16-11 advantage in penalty corners. Matos' nine-save showing earned her the win, while McCune made eight stops for the Dutchwomen.
The Scarlet and Brown will complete the 2011 regular season on Tuesday, October 25 when the team hosts Cortland State at Hall-Leet Stadium beginning at 4:00pm.
