Saints Shut-out Brewers 3-0

Oct. 25: The St. Lawrence University field hockey team, now 12-3 overall, shut-out Vassar College 3-0 in their last conference game of the season Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet and Brown are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the Liberty League with Skidmore and Hamilton, all maintaining records of 6-1.
The Saints out-shot the Brewers 21-9, and had seven more opportunities off penalty corners with 17 to Vassar's ten.
In the first half, the Brewers played the Scarlet and Brown to a standstill. Although the Saints racked up 11 shots, they couldn't seem to get the ball past Vassar goalkeeper Rachel Horwitz.
Despite the Brewer's defensive strength in the first period, the Saints changed the game in the second half. In the 38th minute, junior Brooke Maloney put a number on the scoreboard off a nice give and go with senior Joss-Elyse Smith on the left side of Vassar's defensive end.
Roughly ten minutes later, senior Jennifer Stetson nailed a shot on goal, but Horwitz made an impressive save. Junior Caitlin Estes got her stick on the rebound and slid the ball past Horwitz to increase the deficit by two.
In the 68th minute of the game, Stetson secured the 3-0 win with a goal off a rebound following a penalty corner.
The Brewers racked up some late scoring opportunities with Jennie McAllister and Maura McCarthy taking consecutive shots on Saints goalkeeper senior Emilie Lannamann. However, Lannamann pulled through with two nice saves. In particular, Lannamann made a huge save with 3:34 to play in the game as Jessica Lance fired a ball towards the Scarlet and Brown net. Despite their late offensive pressure, the Brewers came up short.
The Saints will host Cortland on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 4:00 pm at North Country Field.
