Saints Shut Down Engineers 4-2

Oct. 24: The St. Lawrence University field hockey team, now 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference, topped Rensselaer 4-2 Saturday in a big liberty league contest.
The Engineers out -shot the Saints 17-14, but the Scarlet and Brown had three more penalty corner opportunities with 13 to Rensselaer's 11.
The Engineers got on the scoreboard first in the 19th minute of the opening half as Sandy Turnbull grabbed an unassisted goal. Turnbull came up big again about seven minutes later to put the Engineers ahead 2-0. Margaret Chowaniec earned the assist.
The Saints responded 16 seconds later with senior Joss-Elyse Smith bringing the deficit to one and grabbing her 15th goal of the season. Smith currently leads the Scarlet and Brown in goals.
In the second half, the Saints bought a new game, putting a lot of offensive pressure on the Engineers. Sophomore Taylor Vogt tied the score at 2-2 with a nice goal off a pass from first-year Courtney Cartier.
The Saints created some beautiful passing sequences and worked the ball well through the field. In the 65th minute of play, Cartier nailed the ball past Rensselaer's goal keeper Sarah Burcher scoring her first collegiate goal and putting St. Lawrence ahead 3-2. Smith and junior Caitlin Estes received the assists.
With less than three minutes to go in the game, senior All-American Jennifer Stetson secured the win with a goal off a pass from sophomore Emily Riley.
Smith and Riley led the team with three shots each, while junior Brooke Maloney and Stetson followed with two.
The Saints take on Vassar tomorrow, Sunday Oct. 25 in another big conference game.
