St. Lawrence University’s baseball team
rallied with five runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh
inning to win game one of a doubleheader 9-8 against Scranton on Sunday
and are 1-2 after Scranton came back to take the nightcap 4-2 in a
well-pitched game by both teams.

Ryan Fedo had the game winning hit for the Saints in game one,
driving in two runs. Garrett Fitzgerald went four-for-four with two
runs driven in. Kyle Donaldson earned his first collegiate win on the
mound in relief of Sean Voss.

Matt Skelly was the starter and turned in a strong pitching
performance in game two while Zach Slater pitched a scoreless inning of
relief in a 4-2 Saint loss. Bryan Brennan was two for four, Ryan Duff
three-for-three and Fitzgerald was two for three with the two Saint
runs driven in.

The Saints will play against Babson and Lakeland on Monday.

Kirt Broedel went four for five with a run driven in and Brian Brennan had
three hits, but St. Lawrence University’s baseball team dropped its
season opener 11-8 to Eastern Nazarene in Fort Meyers, FL on Saturday.

Steve Bodnar took the loss on the mound for the Saints, who will play a Sunday doubleheader against Scranton.

The Saints head into the 2009 season with a young team which has just
one player in the same spot he played in a year ago other than the
pitching staff, which should be a Saint strong point this season.

Ryan Duff, who is the leading returning hitter with a .377 average a
year ago with 26 runs driven in, moves across the diamond to first base
from third, while sophomore Garrett Fitzgerald, who took over a
starting spot in the outfield and played 20 games in right, will return
to that position after hitting at a .324 clip last season.

Tim Harris, who was solid at second base last season and hit .359,
moves to center field while sophomore Sam Kelly, who hit .350 in
limited playing time, will take over at second. Rookie Brian Brennan
will play short and another rookie, Robert Carman is the likely starter
at third. Kirt Broedel and Ryan Fedo will handle the catching duties
while senior Chris Donaldson should be the starter in right.

Taylor Engle, Tom Pasquali, Kirk Shimkin, and Phillip Blume are other
candidates for playing time at various field positions for the Saints.

Steve Bodnar, 5-3 with a 5.04ERA and 54 strikeouts last season, will
be joined by Sean Voss, Chris Cook and Matt Landers in the Saint
starting rotation. Voss was 0-2 a year ago while Cook was 5-1 with a
5.18 ERA. Landers missed the entire season a year ago with an injury.

Duff, who is recovering from off-season surgery, could also see action
as a relief pitcher with Zach Slater and Matt Skelly also coming out of
the bullpen. Jason Conde, Pat Considine and Kyle Donaldson will also
see action on the mound for the Saints.
