Durham Earns Top-10 Finish in Slalom at Williams Carnival

Rookie Ashley-Kate Durham was eighth in the Women's Slalom on Saturday at Williams.

Feb. 20: St. Lawrence University first-year student Ashley-Kate Durham earned her fourth career top-10 finish on Saturday in the Women's Slalom at the 2010 Williams Carnival in Williamstown, MA.  The Timmins, ON native finished in eighth place overall, leading the Saints' women's Alpine ski team to seventh place in the event.

Durham, who has also had a pair of second place finishes and a seventh in her rookie campaign, raced the course in a combined two-run time of 1:33.2 and was awarded 33.0 points for her efforts.  She was joined in the scoring by sophomore duo Elena Rogers and Ann West, who brought the team's total to 68.0 points.  Rogers was 26th overall and West followed in 34th position.

Rounding out the line-up for the St. Lawrence women's team in the Slalom were juniors Kelly Skinner (39th) and Heidi Robbins (42nd) and sophomore Mackenzie Irwin (DNF 2nd).

Meanwhile, the men's Alpine team struggled to a 10th place finish in the Slalom on Saturday with 39.0 points.  Sophomore Matthew Dodge was the squad's top finisher in 31st place, netting 15.0 points.  The Meredith, NH native was joined in the scoring by junior Thatcher Jacques and senior Michael Wallman, who were 32nd and 42nd, respectively.

Seniors James Andersen (DNF 2nd) and Graham Flinn (DNF 2nd) and sophomore Jeremy Lawless (DQ) also represented St. Lawrence in the Men's Slalom.

Dartmouth College narrowly defeated Vermont by a single point to claim the women's event with 106.0 points, while Colby put up 122.0 points to claim the men's team title.  Colby's Joshua Kernan paced his team to victory by winning the individual title in 1:28.58, while UVM's Megan Ryley won the women's slalom in 1:31.41.

Both the St. Lawrence men's and women's Alpine ski teams will be in action again next weekend, Friday and Saturday, February 26 and 27, in the 2010 Middlebury Carnival/EISA Championships.
