Saints Compete in Giant Slalom to Open UVM Carnival

Feb. 5: The St. Lawrence University men's and women's Alpine ski teams opened competition at the 2010 UVM Carnival at Mt. Mansfield in Stowe, VT on Friday afternoon. First-year student Ashley-Kate Durham led the women's squad with another top-15 finish, while sophomore Jeremy Lawless paced the men's team in the scoring.
Durham, who logged back-to-back runner-up finishes two weeks ago at the St. Michael's Carnival, continued to shine on Friday in the Women's GS. The Timmins, ON native raced in 2:07.85 to finish in 11th position overall to earn 31.0 points for the Scarlet and Brown. Durham was joined in the scoring by juniors Kelly Skinner and Heidi Robbins, who finished in 29th and 35th place, respectively. The trio combined for 62.0 points, landing the Saints' women's team in seventh position.
Sophomores Ann West (42nd), Elena Rogers (DNF 2nd) and Mackenzie Irwin (DNS 2nd) also competed for the Saints in the Giant Slalom.
On the men's side, Lawless earned 34th place with a combined time of 2:07.18 to earn 18.0 points for his squad. Junior Thatcher Jacques (37th) and sophomore Scott Houser (39th) rounded out the team's scoring to place the Saints in ninth place as a team with 46.0 points.
Senior James Andersen finished in 50th place in the Men's GS, while sophomore Matt Dodge (DNF 1st) and senior Graham Flinn (DNF 1st) completed the team's line-up.
The hosting Catamounts of UVM swept the GS races, with the men totaling 141.0 points and the women earning 134.0. David Donaldson claimed the men's individual crown for UVM in 1:59.99 while Megan Ryley also won the women's race for the home team in 2:05.47.
The Saints will compete in the Slalom at the 2010 UVM Carnival tomorrow, Saturday, February 6.
