Jan. 23: St. Lawrence University first-year student Ashley-Kate Durham picked up her second runner-up finish of the weekend in the Slalom on Saturday at the St. Michael's Carnival at Smugglers Notch.  The Timmins, ON native led the Saints' women's alpine ski team to a fifth place finish, while three top-20 finishes on the men's side led the Scarlet and Brown to sixth place.

Durham, who was also the runner-up to Megan Ryley of UVM on Friday in the Giant Slalom, finished behind only Ryley again on Saturday.  Durham raced in a total time of 1:45.27 to fall 1.28 seconds behind Ryley for the individual title.  However, Durham did collect 47.0 points for the carnival standings and 80 towards an NCAA Championship bid.

Sophomores Elena Rogers and Ann West capped the scoring for the women's team at 87.0 points, only six shy of 4th place.  Rogers was 19th in 1:51.29, while West followed in 25th position in 1:52.78.

Also competing for the Saints in the Women's Slalom were juniors Heidi Robbins (27th, 1:53.72) and Kelly Skinner (34th, 2:00.78) and sophomore Bond Longley (44th, 2:32.05).

On the men's side, sophomore Jeremy Lawless paced the Scarlet and Brown by picking up 27.0 points thanks to a 13th place finish.  The Shelburne Falls, MA native raced in 1:37.79 and also picked up 20.0 NCAA points.  Joining Lawless in the top-20 were senior James Andersen, who was 15th in 1:39.01, and junior Thatcher Jacques, who was 19th in 1:41.98.  The trio combined for 73.0 points to finish in 6th position.

Sophomores Scott Houser (26th, 1:42.94) and Matt Dodge (29th, 1:44.46) and senior Graham Flinn (39th, 1:56.30) also represented St. Lawrence in the Men's Slalom.

Joining Ryley as an individual winner was David Donaldson of UVM, who captured the men's event.  UNH won the women's team title with 102.0 points, only one ahead of Vermont while Colby earned the men's title with 111.0 points.

Both the men's and women's Alpine teams will have next weekend off before returning to action at the 2010 UVM Carnival on February 5 and 6.
